We recently wrote about the Past Tense storytelling project at the New York Times. In a new article the Past Tense staff asked the creators of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to look at photos from their archives and to share their thoughts about the New York as shot by Times photographers and the New York of their show.
We love the photos in this article along with the comments of the show’s creators, Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, Daniel Palladino. They know how things looked back in 1959 and thanks to modern technology can make their show look the part.
They also make sure their actors and extras also look and act the part, “Don’t walk down the street in the scene like you’re in 1959, just walk down the street.” Neither the look or the action appears to be “old-timey” because if you were in New York back then it was a modern world.
The show’s creators know what they’re doing and they probably found some inspiration by looking at the photos from the archive. We don’t know how they could stop looking since the photos are so interesting and don’t just represent the times but show the real thing.
